INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERIES In our Instructional Delivery program we use student fees to offset delivery costs to yacht owners, who typically might pay fees of $9,000 to $13,000 for a regular delivery between the Chesapeake or New England and Caribbean. Captain David Appleton's USCG 100 T All Oceans Master's License enables him to put paying student crew aboard his delivery voyages. Student fees reduce the owner's costs significantly, often to less than $4,000.
Student crew are rigorously screened. Most have sailed with us before as students in formal classes or on private charter voyages. Only those we deem ready and able are permitted to enroll for these demanding cruises. Captain Appleton normally skippers these voyages and typically takes a seasoned mate (with from 3,000 to 10,000 nm experience) with him to help with instruction and serve as second in command.
All crew, owners and students alike, receive a copy of AMI's Standard Operating Procedures manual (see the AMI-SOP Table of Contents for the outline of topics covered). Captain Appleton is also qualified to teach American Sailing Association courses, and on suitable voyages (and with the owner's permission), one of these courses may be offered for ASA certification through an approved ASA facility. Or, crew may simply wish to pursue personal objectives, such as acquiring sea time or enhancing their voyaging and sailing skills. AMI's Educational Objectives are the basis for either formal or informal Instructional Deliveries. See the voyages marked with an asterisk in the Representative Voyages list for a sampling of AMI's experience in this type of delivery. See the current Training Cruise Schedule here.....
