EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES FOR OCEAN PASSAGE CRUISES Preparation & Vessel Selection & Equipment Inventory :Learn what to look for in a passage making vessel Form an understanding of safety equipment required and desired for offshore passages Make a thorough presail survey of the vessel and all equipment needed for voyage
Crew Selection and Organization: Develop some criteria for crew selection; what to look for in your shipmates Establish a billet system, division of labor and responsibilities based on skills of the individual crew members Educate the crew, with particular attention to safety and emergency procedures, and the use of special equipment
Watch keeping and Daily Routine: Set up and use a formal watch keeping schedule, looking at several alternatives Establish a daily routine which clearly defines responsibilities of each crew member, including meal preparation, vessel maintenance and cleaning
Navigation: Develop at least an acquaintance with celestial navigation Practice the maintenance of a DR plot over the course of a substantial voyage Enhance terrestrial skills once making landfall Employ electronic navigational devices using all equipment available, using GPS receivers, radar, loran, etc.
Weather: Become familiar with available sources of weather information Develop a more thorough understanding of the meaning of first-hand weather observations
Routing: Make the most safe and efficient passage possible, using all information available: weather, pilot charts, Gulf Stream analysis and so forth
Provisioning & Resource Management: Plan and provision meals for an off shore passage Plan stowage Conserve resources: fuel, electric, water, food
Sailing & Seamanship: Practice safety procedures with particular attention to demands of offshore passages Practice heavy weather sailing techniques and procedures Generally build crew members’ sailing and seamanship skills
